Why We Shelved It:

A breathtaking modern classic of myth, devotion, and tragic beauty. Winner of the Orange Prize for Fiction, Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles belongs on our shelves for its exquisite, lyrical prose and its profound examination of love, honor, and destiny. It sits seamlessly within our collection as an emotional anchor—a story where mythic grandeur meets intimate, devastating humanity.

The Story:

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward, exiled young prince, finds himself sheltered in the court of King Peleus. Unwanted and overshadowed, he expects nothing until he crosses paths with Achilles—"best of all the Greeks"—the golden prince of Phthia, strong, beautiful, and the child of a sea goddess.

Against all odds, the boys forge an unbreakable bond that deepens into a fierce, unspoken love as they grow into men skilled in the arts of war and medicine. But when Helen of Sparta is abducted, Achilles is summoned to fulfill his terrible destiny upon the shores of Troy. Torn between love and fear, Patroclus journeys with him into a brutal siege that will test everything they hold dear, demanding a sacrifice that will echo through centuries of legend.
